Syarzhuk's Voting Guide Electors of President and Vice President: Stein and Honkala, Green-Rainbow party. For the rationale, see my explanation from 4 years ago
Senator in Congress: Warren. The only statewide election where your vote actually means something. While Brown is not horrible, he is clearly a worse choice.
(the following ones are specific to my district)
Representative in Congress: Markey. While Markey hasn’t done much, at least he hasn’t done much bad. On the other hand, giving a seat to Tierney(R) won’t accomplish anything for the state, but might be a negative for the country as a whole.
Councillor, Senator in General Court, Representative in General Court, Clerk of Courts, Registrar of Deeds – all of these have Democrats running unopposed. As a matter of protesting against the single-party rule in this state, leave the box unchecked.
Middlesex county Sheriff: Ernesto Petrone (he runs as an independent, that should be encouraged).
Ballot question 2 (assisted suicide): resounding YES. This should be a right of every person and government should not be in the business of regulating it.
Ballot question 3 (medical marijuana): resounding YES. Read this: http://bluemassgroup.com/2012/11/please-vote-yes-on-question-three-medical-marijuana-is-a-needed-treatment-for-patients-like-my-husband/
Non-binding questions:
1 (feel-good resolution for the state senator) – YES, though of course it doesn’t matter
2 (marijuana regulated/taxed as alcohol) – YES
3 (corporations are not people) – YES
Disclosure: I am a registered member of the Massachusetts Pirate Party. The positions above are my own and are not necessarily those of the MPP.

QOTD Assuming Paul Ryan's plan is perfectly implemented, and no terrorist or military events in the next 30 years occur, which increase our costs, and no more financial crises occur, then the national budget should be balanced by the time a lot of the people reading this will be dead.

Get Shorty rule update My old rule was proven correct in 2008 election - ObamaBiden (length: 10) won over McCainPalin (11). So this year the Republicans got smarter and their ticket is RomneyRyan - 10! It's going to be a very close election...

Chomsky: Is There Truth in Obama's Advertising? markets are supposed to be based on informed consumers making rational choices. But industry spends hundreds of millions of dollars a year to undermine markets and to ensure, you know, to get uninformed consumers making irrational choices. And when they turn to selling a candidate they do the same thing. They want uninformed consumers, you know, uninformed voters to make irrational choices based on the success of illusion, slander, and effective body language or whatever else is supposed to be significant.

Syarzhuk's Voting Guide Electors of President and Vice President: NADER and GONZALEZ, Independent 1) if you live in a non-battleground state, voting for either of the major party candidates is throwing the vote away. No matter how the readers of this entry will vote, MA will vote for Obama anyway 2) in such a case the only rationale for voting at all is to give the major politicians a signal where your preferences are. So if you are a conservative in a non-battleground state, it would make much more sense to vote for Barr, and if you are a liberal, it would make much more sense to vote for Nader/Gonzalez (or the Green ticket of McKinney/Clemente). After all, Dems did move to the left - compare Obama/Biden to the Gore circa 2000/Lieberman - a lot because of Nader.
Senator: JOHN F. KERRY After giving up presidential hopes he gave up pandering to undecided Ohioans and became a real lefty senator - just what we Bay Staters need.
Representative: EDWARD J. MARKEY He is not doing much in Congress - but he's not doing anything bad. The other choice on the ticket is a Republican, and these guys cannot be trusted, period.
State Representative - against all. It's a shame that Republican Tisei runs unopposed.
Ballot questions: 1 (elimination of income tax) - NO. I know a lot of smart folks who want to vote Yes just to see what will the state powers do
2 (decriminalizing marijuana) - YES. In my opinion, this is the biggest reason to vote this year. This is the only item on the ballot where your vote can make a significant and positive change.
3 (prohibition of dog racing) - NO. The greyhound racing business is subject to Mass General Laws and is regulated by the State Racing Commission. If there are any problems with the way dogs are treated, they are a reason to pressure the commission into regulating the racetracks better - but not for closing the tracks outright! I don't think we should be prohibiting an activity that people find enjoyable, getting the state rid of jobs and tax income.

Block African witchcraft curses against McCain and Palin NOW! Bree Keyton, a young woman evangelist who had just traveled to Kenya and visited Obama's home village and what she found out about his relations with his tribal people was chilling. And his "cousin" Odinga was dreadful. She said the witches, warlocks and those involved in satanism and the occult get up daily at 3 a.m. to release curses against McCain and Palin so B. Hussein Obama is elected.

The Poetry of Sarah Palin "Secret Conversation"
I asked President Karzai:
"Is that what you are seeking, also? "That strategy that has worked in Iraq? "That John McCain had pushed for? "More troops? "A counterinsurgency strategy?"
And he said, "Yes."

Get Shorty! Americans have trouble with long words. So it shouldn't be surprising that my highly scientific analysis of the last 10 presidential elections shows that in 8 7 of 10 the winning ticket was the one where the combined length of the last names of running mates was shorter. The rule is "Whichever ticket has the shorter combined length wins, except for Democrats running with Clinton on a ticket or against Bob Dole, when they win anyway" :)

Based on that, we can predict that Obama/Biden will win over McCain/Palin.
Update - the 1992 data was incorrect; as a result, the Clinton rule was added...

Presidential vote predictions Ok, it's time to make your predictions. Here's mine. Mostly the vote outcome will be the same as in 2004 (for example, FL will vote R), with the following differences: - Democrats will pick up Iowa and New Mexico; - Republicans might pick up New Hampshire.
The three toss-up states for which I am not making predictions and which will be key factors in deciding this race are Virginia, Ohio and Colorado. Whoever gets any 2 of these 3 will win.
Make your own predictions in the comments.
Update: Obama got all 3 of VI, OH and CO, and won. Dems did pick up IA and NM. Reps did not pick up NH. However, the outcome was way different, since Dems picked a lot of states, including FL

That's a good one I was talking to a friend's little girl, and she said she wanted to be Vice President some day. Both of her parents were standing there, so I asked her, 'If you were to be the Vice President of the United States of America, what is the first thing you would do?'
She replied, "What is it exactly a vice-president does?"
And I said, "Welcome to the Republican Party, sweetheart."

McCain also understands this election is about inexperience. America doesn’t want another Bush administration, and the only way to insure that is to elect people so inexperienced they don’t know enough about the government to corrupt it. Barack Obama’s set the experience bar pretty low, and to win, McCain needs to fail to clear it. Hence Sarah Palin, whose main qualification is she’s not a terrible mother. I can’t imagine a candidate less ready for national power — or more perfectly what Americans are looking for. By choosing Palin, McCain has guaranteed his victory in November. And also another four years of slapdash, incompetent leadership. But really at this point anything else would feel weird.
